Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September: 10.30am-4.30pm
This two-day course would give those attending a firm grounding in what makes good travel writing. Combining tutorial, discussion and a couple of short writing assignments, attendees will leave the course with a better understanding of the mechanics of travel writing and where and how to place articles and books.
The course will cover as many aspects of travel writing as possible including:
- What do we actually mean when we talk about ‘travel writing’?
- The history of and developments in travel writing – where are we now?
- Examples of good travel writing – great writers.
- Examples of bad travel writing
- What makes good and bad travel writing?
- Cliches to avoid (like the plague...)
- Avoiding ‘what I did on my holidays’ style writing
- Finding your own voice
- The importance of pre-trip research
- What to look for when you’re out and about: finding the right subject
- Identifying your best outlets: books, newspapers, periodicals, guidebooks
- Writing book proposals and approaching periodicals
- Tips for when you’re on location
