Travel Writing Workshop with Charlie Connelly

Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September: 10.30am-4.30pm

This two-day course would give those attending a firm grounding in what makes good travel writing. Combining tutorial, discussion and a couple of short writing assignments, attendees will leave the course with a better understanding of the mechanics of travel writing and where and how to place articles and books.

The course will cover as many aspects of travel writing as possible including:

  • What do we actually mean when we talk about ‘travel writing’?
  • The history of and developments in travel writing – where are we now?
  • Examples of good travel writing – great writers.
  • Examples of bad travel writing
  • What makes good and bad travel writing?
  • Cliches to avoid (like the plague...)
  • Avoiding ‘what I did on my holidays’ style writing
  • Finding your own voice
  • The importance of pre-trip research
  • What to look for when you’re out and about: finding the right subject
  • Identifying your best outlets: books, newspapers, periodicals, guidebooks
  • Writing book proposals and approaching periodicals
  • Tips for when you’re on location
